Abstract Body
Introduction: Higher adiposity in early life plays a pivotal role in the later development of obesity and non-communicable disease. Skin fold thickness (SFT) is a simple, cheap and non-invasive method of measuring adiposity . SFT-derived equations are commonly used in calculating fat mass. However, Air Displacement Plethysmography (ADP) remains the gold standard of fat mass estimation which is not readily available in clinical set-up. The alignment of SFT -derived fat mass with reference standards of ADP-derived fat mass remains uncertain.
Objectives: To evaluate the alignment of estimated infant fat mass from SFT-derived equations relative to published ADPbased Lambda–Mu–Sigma (LMS) reference standards.
Methods: In this prospective cohort study , suprailiac SFT of 203 infants were measured by the Harpenden Skinfold Caliper at birth. SFT-derived fat mass was estimated by the Catalano equation. Fat mass Z -scores were calculated using age and gender- specific LMS parameters of ADP based fat mass reference data. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was performed to determine whether the median Z -score significantly differed from the reference median.
Results: The median SFT-derived fat mass and the median Z score were 1.15 kg and 4.05, respectively . All the infants depicted a positive fat mass Z -scores relative to the ADP reference standards. The median Z -scores were significantly higher than the reference median (p < 0.05), indicating a systematic elevation in SFT-derived fat mass compared to ADP-based reference values.
Conclusion: The systematic elevation in adiposity estimates of SFT derived infant fat mass highlights methodological or population-related differences when applying SFT-derived equations against ADP-based reference data.
