Abstract Body
Introduction: As per WHO, child abuse is defined as all forms of physical and/or emotional illtreatment, sexual abuse, neglect or negligent treatment. Violence at home is found to be associated with being a victim of abuse. Family factors such as parents’ age, level of education, family size and structure contribute to child abuse.
Objective: To determine family characteristics of children with history of child abuse.
StudyDesign: Descriptive study conducted on children with alleged history of abuse
Participants: 65 children with alleged history of abuse who presented to a tertiary hospital in an Urban city of a Southern State in India.
Procedure: After taking informed consent from the participants, family demographics such as family type, family size, parent’s education, employment status and socio-economic status was collected using a proforma.
Results: From the study done, statistical significance (P value of 0.029) was noted between the family status and the type of abuse. Sexual abuse (75%) predominated among children who stayed with both the parents and in 50% cases the perpetrator was known to the child and family . Unemployment, low socio-economic status of the family resulted in the child facing sexual abuse in 65% and 62% of the cases respectively . Alcohol abuse among the parents made the child prone to multiple abuse(41%).
Conclusion: Certain Family demographics are risk factors for child abuse and should be considered while managing a case of child abuse.
