REVIEW OF PEDIATRIC ACUTE TRANSFUSION REACTION IN PEDIATRIC OUTPATIENT ROOM IN CIPTO MANGUNKUSUMO NATIONAL GENERAL HOSPITAL JAKARTA

Background : Blood transfusion therapy is an effective and indispensable treatment, but adverse events such as infectious diseases and immune reactions cannot be completely avoided. Acute transfusion reaction are mostly not severe and rarely cause severe conditions. The objective of this study was to analyze all reported transfusion reactions of the year 2017 and it’s characteristic in the pediatric outpatient tranfusion room in Cipto Mangunkusumo National General Hospital. Material : This study is a retrospective data analysis that was carried out by retrieving data from medical record of transfusion in the pediatric outpatient transfusion room in Cipto Mangunkusumo National General Hospital Hospital from January 2017 through December 2017. All pediatric patients who had a reported acute reaction to transfusion of any blood component were included Results : A total of 26.004 transfusions were documented and the total reported transfusions were 163 cases. The incidence of transfusion reaction was 1 in 160 of all transfusions (0,62%); in which 92 cases (56,4%) were type I reaction and 63 cases (38,6%) were type II reaction. Only 8 cases (5%) were type III reactions. The most common reaction was itching (31,6%) and urticaria (29,6%). The highest frequency of the reactions occurred in the thrombocyte concentrate transfusions which accounted for 74 cases (45%). Conclusions : The incidences of transfusion reactions are low when compared to those reported by other countries. Future studies are needed to address the differences in reaction transfusion rates, and to further addresses blood transfusion practices in the pediatric
